Wear in the World: Yakumo Saryo

Tokyo, Japan

— Yakumo Saryo in Tokyo, Japan is one of the most beautiful experiences in the world. It’s a traditional Japanese kaiseki experience, elevated by Shinichiro Ogata, designer for Aesop in Japan, as well as the Andaz hotel in Tokyo. The restaurant lies atop a hill, surrounded by lush gardens. The interior approach lives between traditional Japanese design and wabi sabi minimalism.

The beauty of Yakumo Saryo is its commitment to wabi sabi principles + minimalism. I’d wear something that reflects this aesthetic, while focusing on subtle texture and fabric combinations.

My trip would not be complete without design inspiration, so here are some of my takeaways from Yakumo Saryo aesthetic. All of the ceramics - plates, tea mugs, bowls - were different from one another, but somehow worked within the greater context of mismatched minimalism. And the dim, golden lighting was key in grounding us within the experience and space. We felt like we were in our own world while we were there.
